Genji Tsuushin Agedama

Adventure Island meets Alien Soldier

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1991

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

An auto-runner reminiscent of Adventure Island. The gimmick is that you have a regular attack but can charge it up to five different levels, with a different screen filling attack at each level. These tend to vary, but the enemy attack patterns are such that you want to kill them as quickly as possible and thus you want to get that top level 5 attack as much as possible. Excellent for bosses who are immune to most full attacks. Controls are responsive and fun for the most part. Platforming works well, although there's little of it. More on that later. I really enjoyed my time with it. Pleasant surprise.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Sadly, the levels are pretty boring. They each have a distinct look but are little more than a straight hallway. Every now and then there's a platforming section over lava but most of the time you won't need to jump. Disappointing, really.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Super silly Mega Man-esque theme. Has a vague Japanese sci-fi aesthetic.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

I love the art direction. Large sprites and goofy designs, combined with silly animations. Great use of color and even some nice effects like transparency when walking behind a waterfall. Good stuff for a HuCard title.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Fun Japanese music. Each stage has a unique track. Sounds effects take a backseat which is fortunate because there's a lot going on. If every shot and death made a sound it would be a deafening cacophony.

Overall Score: 70
