Samurai Ghost ZeroGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: Namco
Year: 1990
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
There are three distinct modes - a rather standard 2D sidescroller, a huge sprites sidescroller, and an overhead view. The first one is a very poor man's Ninja Spirit, the second is Samurai Ghost with Earnest Evans' ragdoll physics, and the overhead view is another poor man's replica of a much better game - Gauntlet, in this case. The controls in the first and last ones are similar - just move to the right while mashing the attack button. Kickback is massive when you take damage, and while most enemies die in one hit, their spawn points take a ton of hits, so it's usually best to avoid them rather than take them out. The controls in the Samurai Ghost section are comically bad. Still, I was able to progress through stages without too much trouble, so long as I kept running. Otherwise enemies swarm you and take you out sooner than later. It's like Wizards & Warriors without any lives or continues.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Level design is braindead. Go to the right and take out enemies. There's almost not platforming in the first mode, none in the second, and nothing much to see in the Gauntlet levels either.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
I usually like Japanese horror settings, but this one doesn't have much of a vibe.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Looks like an early 80's arcade title. Terrible. It looks like Ghosts 'n Goblins
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
The sound effects are hilariously bad. I was laughing out loud a few times at the "voices" for bosses and whatnot. Music is decent for this kind of game.
