Gomola Speed for PCE

Image: MobyGames

Gomola Speed

Snake x Qix x Gauntlet

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: UPL

Year: 1990

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

You start as a single cell and collect body orbs by touching them. In other words, it plays just like Snake. You die if an enemy touches your head, and you lose body parts when they are touched. This happens often since enemies swarm to you. This would all be fine and dandy if not for the key mechanic of the game which is that you need to encircle enemies or pickups with your body. This is only possible with a long body and even then it's insanely difficult to turn that tightly using a d-pad. Especially when the target is moving! This is not a fun activity.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

I could deal with the gameplay if it weren't for the level designs which force you to use all of the worst aspect of gameplay. That, and the tight corridors which guarantee close encounters with aggressive enemies.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

I love the idea of this game and it exhudes a cool vibe desire the minimal presentation and non-existent setting

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Has an R-Type look. Lots of browns and greens.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The main musical track sounds like a bridge between verses in an 80s pop alternative rock song. Not bad, but horribly repetitive.

Overall Score: 38
