Ground Zero Texas for Sega CD

Ground Zero Texas

The best of the FMV gallery shooters

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Sony Imagesoft

Year: 1993

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is more like it. It's actually possible to move the reticle to your target - they give you enough time, the hit boxes are generous, and you have unlimited ammo so you can spam several shots at an enemy. It's hard to hit small targets, but those are rare in the early game. Also, changing the camera is much simpler than most of these FMV games. Just hold the d-pad and press C.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Each shooting gallery is a static, single screen. You change the camera between four locations. If you don't, enemies will drain the health of that camera, kind of like Missile Command. It works, but is so simple that boredom sets in quickly.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers in a Texas border town. I guess that aliens were smart enough to pick a town that's armed to the teeth! The setting and acting are hokey but fun.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Grainy video, of course. Still, things look pretty good, all things considering. Or, at least as good as one of these 16-bit FMV monstrocities can look.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

No music, as per usual. Why don't FMV games have a soundtrack? All you've got are the NPCs talking to you in short cutscenes.

Overall Score: 39
