Hana Taaka Daka!

Goemon as a chicken shooter

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1991

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Movement is a little too fast but feels good for the most part. There's no weapons besides powering up the regular shot. You can gather options who trail after you but rather than staying in your vapor trail they instead snap to your location. So you can't position them to cover the screen. In fact they take damage so you can't use them as a shield. And they're rare so losing one is a pain. You can gather two health pickups which reach make you larger and thus easier to be hit.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

There's a good amount of variety. Some stages have verticality and even some dead ends like Gradius II. Weird elements abound, like peeps under a trap that will kill you instantly. It's a unique experience.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

It's Goemon/Legend of the Mystical Ninja as a chicken, in a shooter. Tanookis and parasols and all kinds of goofy Japanese stuff is everywhere.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Extremely colorful. Great pixel art, but of weird stuff. Quite a bit of spirit flicker is the only real downer.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I enjoy the crazy theme, but the music is a little much for me. It's playful. Too playful.

Overall Score: 78
