Hatris
The best of the Noun-tris titlesGenre: puzzle - blocks
Publisher: Micro Cabin
Year: 1991
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
I had painfully low expectations going in, since the other Noun-tris games are all pretty awful, but I surprisingly enjoyed my time with this one. It's a simple as can be, and easy too. You can stack hats deep. I'm talking dozens could be stacked in a column. They vary in height, which is honestly this game's only true innovation. They fall is sets of two, so the varying heights of each column allows you to drop and place one of the two hats and then move the second one independently. In my book this makes it superior to, say, Yoshi.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
It uses the Tetris (for NES) style of levels. Just pick the speed and height and away you go.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
Such a stupid, dorky concept. Not a game you want others to know you enjoy playing.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Extremely unappealing and bare bones. The base of the columns has the head of a man who looks suspiciously like Hitler. The hats are all very small sprites and very simple, at that. And there's no background. This looks decidedly 8 bit.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
The music is cute but only a few measures long. I muted it.
