Hawk F-123
The un-UN SquadronGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Pack-In-Video
Year: 1992
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Yet another peashooter game with enemies that require too many hits. There are three different weapons but they're all peashooters. You can power them up into a very slight spread but it takes a lot of consecutive pickups of the same colored drop. A couple of options can be found but these vanish after a bit, I think. I couldn't figure out why they disappeared. Sometimes it was because they aren't invincible to all enemy types but other times they just vanished without warning. Speed is horribly slow. Not just your movement speed - also the game itself. It's a slow-moving slog.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Some of the most uninspired level design in a shooter of the era. The background may change, but there's no variety in gameplay in any stage. A few stages have a prolonged missile attack that fills the screen and is virtually impossible to survive. Prolonged is a good word for the stages in general. They drag on and on.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
Discount UN Squadron. I usually like modern warfare games but there's nothing exciting about this game other than a few fun sprites, like Wild Bill's helicopter.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Laughable artwork, from the opening cutscene all the way through the end credits. The second stage reminded me of the Engage minigame in the Super Scope 6 game. I couldn't unsee the ridiculousness of the artwork after that.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Probably the best aspect of this game, and that's not saying much. Music is pretty dorky. Sounds didn't annoy me.
Overall Score: 34
