Hellfire
CD soundtrack and empty spaceGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1991
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Big upgrade from the Genesis version. The slowdown is gone, movement is much faster, and the large sprite is less of an issue. Overall it plays well and can be fun at times. More on that later. Four main weapons (up/down, back, forward, and X) can be cycled through at will.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Oh these stages? Who designed these? There are long stretches of nothing on screen. You'll kill a small wave of enemies and wait 3-5 seconds anything to happen! It's insane. Slow and mostly boring.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
The addition of long beautiful cutscenes certainly spice things up. They have seemingly nothing to do with the game but hey, cute girls in space suits, right?
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Huge chunky and rounded sprites. Looks almost like an Amiga title. Some interesting elements here and then but the backgrounds are generally just a black screen. In fact the nice looking sprites feel like they were ripped from a different game than the drab, flat and boring backgrounds.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
Holy smokes! This is what a CD port should do with its music. It's not my personal favorite style of music - some harder guitar would be welcome here - but man oh man is it beautiful. The sounds are meh, but what a soundtrack.
