Kaizo Chojin Shubibinman 3: Ikai no Princess

Cute Strider

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Masaya

Year: 1992

System: PCE CD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Looks like Mega Man X but plays more like Strider. Main weapon is a sword with a wide arch but limited range. Enemies have ill defined hit boxes and collision, especially the bosses. You can power up an orb which is the best way to attack. Kill enemies off screen or before they can get close, power up, and repeat. You'll take a lot of his but health drops are plentiful. I really wish there were other weapons or upgrades.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Every stage is distinctly different from the last. Enemy patterns aren't terribly interesting, unfortunately. But one minute you're running and gunning while the next it's a vertical escape auto scroller. I love the variety.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

No idea what's happening, but it has a Mega Man meets Masters of the Universe vibe.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Graphics are a mix of Mega Man X and Gunstar Heroes. Extremely colorful and imaginative, especially in the character designs. One of the best looking PC Engine games. Fantastic effects like the explains and sparks flying off your sword. Parallax scrolling and nice shading on the stories and background to add depth.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Some nice solid tracks, although others are weird, like the theme in level 2. The sound effects, however, couldn't be worse. Sometimes they don't play at all, like in the auto scroller section of level 2, while other plays over and over and over. The sound mixing is also terrible, with the music at a nice level but some sounds too loud while others are barely a whisper.

Overall Score: 75
