Kyuukai Douchuuki

Play-by-play courtesy of a Chipmunk high on helium

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Namco

Year: 1991

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Hard to hit the ball. Your bat barely reaches to the other side of the plate, even when in the far front side of the batter's box. It's not impossible but feels weird, especially with how much movement pitches can have. Movement in the field and baserunning is very slow and throws are very fast. The whole thing feels a little off in its physics.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

World Tour and Exhibition modes (1P or 2P). Easy to jump into a game.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Feels like it was made for children, by developers who had read about children in a pitcure book. The overtly silly atmostphere is sickeningly sweet to the point that I wanted to gag.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Tiny, squat sprites. And not in a good way like the Super Famista series. No, in this game the sprites are so small that they have no discernable legs and look offputting. The animation is quite good, but again, with weird looking sprites.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Gag me. Sound effects are mostly made by one of the Chipmunks while high on helium. It's ear-splitting. Music is purposely offkey and offkilter. All of the offs. Just horrible.

Overall Score: 43
