Madou Monogatari I
Kindergarten Dungeon Death QuestGenre: rpg - dungeon
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1996
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
It's a dungeon crawler like the Mega Drive version but the fights are more standard for the genre. The same weirdness from the other games in the series exist here, like no health bar. This one is worse that the MD version because there's no map.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Typical dungeon crawler. You begin in a small floor of a tower with locked doors and all the usual trappings. The dungeons feel empty and samey everywhere you go. The lack of map makes this nigh unplayable.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
Same as the Super Famicom and MD versions. You're a kindergartner at a magic school! So, if Harry Potter had started 6 years earlier. No thanks.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
It's overly cute but the graphics are undeniably well drawn. Enemy designs are lifted directly from the Puyo Puyo games, which I think is the case given that this is made by Compile. The dungeons have little to no personality but the sprite work here is excellent.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I'm not too keen on the music, even though it's well made. There are a ton of voice samples which are juvenile and annoying.
Overall Score: 30
