Shadowgate in an apartment buildingGenre: adventure - point n click
Publisher: Micro Cabin
Year: 1989
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
This is a visual text adventure in the same vein as Shadowgate or Deja Vu. Controls are simple enough with a long menu on the right of the screen with actions such as LOOK, USE, TAKE, etc. the menu can become long, but it's easy to navigate. Also, there's no need to "find the pixel" link you do on so many of these point and click games. Instead everything is discoverable through the menus.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
I know this is based on a manga and I suspect that you need a deep understanding of the lore to know what you're supposed to do. At least I hope that's the case because there is no help to be had in-game. There's no direction, no guides, no hints, and seemingly no plot. Just wander around and do stuff or use a walkthrough to get through the game. Either way I'm calling this the game's fatal flaw.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You're a college age guy living in a small apartment building with a handful of oddball characters. There's no sci-fi or fantasy elements - just a straight up small world of chracters living and interacting. Refreshing, but very small. The world itself is teeny tiny - only about 10 or so screens.
