System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
One of the strangest driving experiences I've ever had in a video game. You don't actually need to steer - the track moves but your car stays in the road no matter what. You can't hit the sides or spin out or anything. The only reason to move left or right is to line up to shoot enemies with your machine gun. Again, the controls feel so divorced from the video playing in the background that you feel weightless. It's a bizarre feeling.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
The objective is to kill an unknown number of enemies before completing a few laps. This feels completely random as the game doesn't show you a count of kills (accumulated or needed) and also doesn't show anything resembling a finish line. The tracks have different looks, but it's a jumbled mess of black and other dark colors. There seems to be only one mode (story mode), including no multiplayer. I'm being generous by awarding this even a 1.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
The setting is a mix of Running Man and Death Race. A chatty MC explains the rules, the public broadcast of the race, each track, and hypes both you and your opponents up. It's predictably over-the-top. However, the actor is clearly reading cue cards and otherwise acting horribly. It's peak cringe.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
This is one of the least colorful games I've seen. 90% of the screen is jet black while the remaining 10% is a single color. For example, the second race takes place in an underwater tube, so the contrasting color is dark, dark blue. The car sprites aren't too bad, but don't make up for the terrible FMV video playing in the background.
