Moto Roader MC

Super Sprint & Rocket League

Genre: racing - isometric

Publisher: Masaya

Year: 1992

System: PCE CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Super Sprint clone, and a good one. I so wish I could play this with 4 other people! That would be a killer party. Underwhelming as a racing game, but as a party game? Mmwah, chef's kiss. Extremely slippery controls which can be made even worse from the Config page. You can also toggle on or off collision between cars (turn off!) or the missile and bomb weapons. Speaking of the weapons, this is my chief complaint. The control scheme makes no sense for a two button controller since your two weapons are binded to your gas and reverse buttons. And by the way, why is there a reverse button anyway? So, to fire a missile you have to release and tap the gas. Oh and everyone has unlimited ammo which makes for utter chaos. The racer who comes in first is the one who's able to pull away from the pack at the start of the race. Ultimately, this is a great attempt, but Super Off-Road, Championship Pro-Am, and Battle Cross are better options.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Three modes and 37 courses. The normal racing mode has 25 courses across 5 distinct biomes. Love the variety and the fun track designs. The second mode is called Omake (bonus?) and is a 2D Rocket League soccar mode where you ram or shoot missiles at a soccer ball. This mode has 3 fields and can only be played multi-player, as either 1v1 or 2v2. The last mode is hidden and only accessible by pressing Select five times on the main menu. It's a Battle mode where your goal is knock everyone else off the arena. Once again this is only playable with other human players, as anywhere from 2-5 players.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Simple, fun presentation. Easy to jump into a game. Hiding the Battle mode was a stange choice and Japanese on most menus makes is a small barrier.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Small sprites and low resolution but great use of color and fun artwork throughout. Minimal animation on the backgrounds. I like the cute artwork.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Music is quiet and drowned out by the screeching tires and exploding weapons.

Overall Score: 61
