Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu - Soccer Hen MD

The precursor to Mario Strikers

Genre: sports - soccer

Publisher: PAL SOFT

Year: 1992

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Checks off most of my sports game checklist - arcadey, simple, fun. You only control a single player on your team. All others will take your orders to pass or shoot, but you only have direct control of the one guy. I like how simple this makes things, which is a double-edged sword because the gameplay loops gets stale quickly. Plays and the ball move at a snail's pace, and players stop to receive a pass, so there's no opportunity to set up even rudimentary passing plays. The only gimmick is a power-up meter by holding down B to create a hard kick.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

When playing one-player there's only a single mode - Tournament. This may as well be an exhibition mode since there's no save - only passwords. So yeah, just a pick up and play single game mode. Still, for this game that's all you really need.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The Koukou boys of River City Ransom fame are here in all their glory. What a great bunch! There's minimal language barrier as well.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Simple by stylish. Looks just like the NES version, but without the horrible sprite flicker. The expressive animations and solid art style win out here.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great music and simple sound effects. The music is too quiet in this version, for some reason.

Overall Score: 60
