Operation Wolf

Murdock, I'm coming to get you!

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1990

System: PCE

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Ridiculously hard. I completed a couple of the four levels but can't do the other two. Your cursor is simply too slow and hit detection is too poor to kill enemies quickly enough. You get about 90 seconds of gameplay before your inevitable defeat. The hit detection is my main complaint. You can hit an enemy as much as you'd like but he's going to go down only if and when the CPU decides to let it count. It's as if RNG is calculated on each shot.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Despite iffy gameplay, I really like the levels! There are numerous kinds of threats, including ground enemies at three different depths. Most shoot at you at regular intervals but others dance around when you aim at them or throw projectiles or weave in predictable movement patterns. It's fun and frantic, making it all the more disappointing that the hit detection is so awful. It's also worth menting that you can select any stage, Mega Man style, giving the game a little flexibility.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

This is very clearly First Blood: Part 2. You're not-Rambo gunning through not-Vietnam to rescue POWs. Good stuff.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Yes it's fairly primitive artwork but sprites are huge, chunky, and satisfying. Great color as well. But yeah, this is a game from the 8-bit era and looks it.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The sound effects are satisfying but not overpowering. Music is 8-bit quality but completely forgettable.

Overall Score: 55
