Paddle Fighter

Some things are better in real life

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1991

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is a competent digital recreation of air hockey. In other words, it's Pong with a paddle that moves in all four directions. The physics are fine, although the puck tends to rarely lose momentum. Moving your paddle is a hair too slow, so it's safest to simply defend. But this makes games last for a long time since they go to 7 scores (best of 13). You have two abilities - block your goal for 10 secs or so, and grab the puck so you can serve it. The story mode has you matched up against a series of anime heads who each have their own unique special abilities. For example, making the puck zap and freeze you for a couple of seconds, making the puck invisible, hitting the puck from a distance, etc. This adds a small amount of challenge and variety, but each player one gets three percent match and the computer uses them up quickly. I played 7 full matches and I don't think I'd ever come back to it. Probably best as a 2P game. And nowhere near as interesting as Windjammers and other Pong alternatives.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There are several distinct arenas with unique geometry. The physics of these don't always make sense. It's as if some walls have jagged edges and will send the puck backwards or otherwise in random directions. This encourages defensive gameplay which honestly is boring. But hey, at least there's something.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Lots of Japanese text. Bizarre, unrelated anime characters. Most are pretty women but there's also a Donkey and a Robot. Weird stuff, and not in a good way.

Art Style Score: 2

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Horrible music. I muted it after a minute or two. It's just a jumble of the same instrument being played on a handful of notes. Sound effects are fine.

Overall Score: 43
