Poor man's Kickle CubicleGenre: arcade - n/a
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1995
System: MD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Take your pick on which game to compare this to - Dig Dug, Bomberman, Mr. Do, et al, but I think it compares best with Kickle Cubicle, and not to its own advantage. KC significantly outclasses this simple but frustrating title because of its puzzles and gameplay mechanics. This title has only two - create an ice block, and kick it. The objective is to kill all enemies on the Pac-Man like board. Enemies swarm to you, making it hard to corner and attack them, and the blocks themselves are hard to differentiate from other titles. Lastly, it takes a couple of seconds for a new block to be created, making this game a chore of waiting, dodging, and hoping enemies stay away. Ultimately, it's just not as fun as its competition.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
The stages are all very much similar to the last. Imagine Bomberman'a story mode stages, but smaller and less dynamic.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You're a penguin. The art style and characters are extremely generic and lifeless.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
This game is a compilation of the original 1982 arcade game, which looks awful, and its remake/sequel, which doesn't look half bad. Again, the characters are lifeless but the board itself looks decent. The cutscenes are prerendered (ala Sonic 3D Blast), a look that feels completely out of place here.
