Pop'n Magic

The best Bubble Booble clone

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Telenet Japan

Year: 1992

System: PCE CD

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

As you might have guessed, this is a Bubble Bobble clone. Shoot enemies a couple of times to turn them into a bubble and either shoot them to pop the bubble and get a piece of fruit, or throw them against another bubble to get a whole bunch of fruit. The concept is simple enough, but what sets this apart from all the other BB clones is that the controls are nice and responsive. Plus, the hit detection is generous and you can take multiple hits. Another great mechanic is the ability to drop through platforms. Thank you for that! All told it's a good time.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Pretty standard stuff for this sub genre. Enemies don't only move toward you when they see you and spawn in until you've whacked them all. It feels like a great platformer with single screen stages.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

A long opening cinematic tells a story in Japanese. It looks like an early 80s kids anime show. The sprites are colorful and interesting.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

One of the most colorful games I've ever played. Fantastic animation and sprite work. Looks like an early NeoGeo title, to be honest.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Lively music and pleasant sound effects. Well suited to this sort of game.

Overall Score: 80
