Putty Squad
Sunday Putty SundayGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Ocean Software
Year: 1994
System: SNES PAL
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Far better than the original game, but still not much fun. You've got a short jump but a powerful punch attack that can be upgraded with a projectile. Beyond the standard platforming, most of the gameplay centers around collecting fellow blobs and finding and using items. Unfortunately, most items don't seem to do anything. They'll explode, do something useless, or do nothing at all. Others will do something incredibly helpful, like grant you invincibility or let you float around in a rocket, but they either go away quickly or sap your health until you die. The randomness and unpredictability of these items makes them unfun to use.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Standard Western design - find everything to unlock the door. Confusing and unintuitive pathing. Hard to spot platforms.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You're a blob of putty. Uhh
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
That Amiga look. Good pixel art is counteracted by ugly art direction. All enemies have an unattractive, googly-eyed weirdness to them. Not my cup of tea.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Frenetic songs that loop too quickly. They use some excellent sounds and for the first few seconds sound appealing, but their constatnt drone quickly gets old. Sound effects similarly have good quality but annoyed the heck out of me. It's over-the-top - the loud boing when jumping, squish when stretching, and sloppy wet lick when flattening to the ground. And weird voices that say gibberish.
