Racing Aces
Steel Talons the racing gameGenre: racing - vehicle combat
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1993
System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
If Steel Talons was a racing game. Imagine Diddy Kong Racing, but at 3 frames per second. Playing this horrible game made me wish that Pilotwings had a race mode. Now that would've been something. This sad game, on the other hand, is barely playable. One interesting idea it uses is the ability to shoot at opponents.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Flying in a racing game is always a weird idea because there's not much to keep you on the "track". A couple of gates must be flown through, but this can easily be cheesed to finish a race quickly. The only saving grace are the modes for season, pre-season, or practice.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You can fly only prop planes, from Sopwith Camels to P-38 Lightnings. Your opponents are charicatures of famous aviators, such as Lindberg and Amelia Earheart. It's something, I suppose.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
As mentioned previously, the performance of this game is atrocious. The sprites are only so-so, and with no scaling or polygonal power to draw 3D graphics, this game looks truly awful.
