Rayxanber II
The shooter with invincible enemiesGenre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Data West
Year: 1991
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
The teeny tiniest ship firing the teeny tiniest shot ever. And there's almost no point in firing because enemies are damage sponges. I gave up and just started avoiding them until they inevitably left the screen. I've never seen anything quite like it. There are at least three weapons that offer weird spread effects. A few shot forward but at least half will give you up/down or even reverse weapons. You can only carry one and can't switch so tough luck if you're stuck with a terrible one. But again, you can't kill anything so why bother? Movement is very slow and there's no speed powerups. Enemies are significantly faster than you which makes for a very high difficulty. Death sends you back to the start of the level.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Pretty standard stuff, but the nigh invincible enemies make for some truly awful encounters. The first boss is equally terrible. A tiny orifice opens and spews invincible projectiles which you must avoid before recentering to maybe get a single hit on the boss's soft spot. This is the worst first boss of all time. Who made this?
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Generic terrestrial sci-fi setting. Notihing to set it apart
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Tiny sprites, but interesting backgrounds with good use of parallax. Not remarkable but not bad either.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Positivitly groovy music. The whole environment is pretty chill, which doesn't do much to get you excited for what's happening on screen.
Overall Score: 30
