Renny Blaster
Punch and kick CastlevaniaGenre: action - punch n kick
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1995
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
They were making PCE Engine games in 1995?! This one looks and plays like a clumsy Castlevania game with magical charge attacks and even more laggy controls. Combat is strange. There's a long pause between attacks so if you don't land a hit your vulnerable. Maybe there's a party system that I can't quite figure out. Sometimes attacks so nothing and other times they melt away health. Charge up three attacks which can be selected between stages. You earn new ones Mega Man style after beating a boss.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Stages look and feel very distinct even though they're most a walk to the right. Castlevania stairs are slower than any Castlevania game. Long periods devoid of enemies and each enemy encounter locks you into a version portion of the map until you take down whatever enemies are there. It's almost like a series of 1v1 or 1v2 battles. It's better than the sun of it's parts but not top tier by any stretch of the imagination.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
There's an insane amount of Japanese dialogue and text. The voiceovers even continue to play after you've skipped past all the on-screen text and have moved to the next scene. I have no idea what the story is but the crazy monsters appearing and attacking our modern day looking protagonists has me intrigued.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Nice artwork and sprites. The animation is particularly noteworthy. To a fault, really, as the long aniamtions lead to laggy controls. Or vice versa.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Eh, the music sounds ok but has a noir feel to it that doesn't do it for me. Sound effects get eaten up constantly as well.
Overall Score: 67
