Rent a Hero
Phantasy Star, Ultraman, and Earthbound walk into a bar...Genre: adventure - overhead
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1991
System: MD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
Well here's a weird one. It looks like Phantasy Star, plays like Ultraman, and has a setting like Earthbound. It's creative but ultimately a hollow experience with more ideas than gameplay elements. You have only two things to think about - money and batteries. The gameplay loop amounts to nothing more than talking to NPCs, completing fetch quests, and fighting 1v1 fights that make Ultraman look like Street Fighter 2. I'll give the game credit elsewhere, but it's paper thin in the gameplay department.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
I love the structure of taking jobs to make money, but they amount to nothing more than a series of NPC encounters and a 1v1 fight. The world is too small and boring. Wasted potential.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
I LOVE the modern setting and meta theme of taking gamey assignments from a handler from a shadowy org called SEGA.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Unimpressive even for 1991, especially in the ugly 1v1 segments. The world is samey, with every house and building with the same brick contruction. Is this a Soviet town?
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
The music is fine, I guess. Actually, I played for over an hour and I didn't even make a mental note of the soundtrack. Was there even any music at all?
Overall Score: 37
