Road Spirits
Let's take a leisure Sunday driveGenre: racing - arcade
Publisher: Pack-In-Video
Year: 1991
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Extremely forgiving controls. You rarely need to lay off the gas to make any turn. It's more like a pleasure cruise across the world than a serious race. Gameplay is fast but very easy.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Levels have no features whatsoever. Just turn right, then left, then right, then...you get the idea. Each "road" is 4 minutes long although I finished each in about 3:15 with no problem. The only praise I can give it is that each road is in a distinct locale, like the Florida Keys, the Nile, etc.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
A cute girl is shown on screen between each race. That's the only bit of presentation. Well, that and a map showing you travel to the next road just like in Street Fighter 2.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
I want to praise the visuals for their excellent performance. Sprite scaling looks good and everything runs smoothly. There just isn't much to lok at. Car sprites are rather small. Backgrounds fit the locales perfectly and give this game a distinct look and feel.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Excellent music that's straight out of an 80's movie like Beverly Hills Cop. Pick a song before starting the race. The bummer is that the turning sound drowns out the music.
Overall Score: 55
