Silpheed for Sega CD

Silpheed

Star Box

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1993

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like Gyruss or Tempest. Enemies scale in from the distance which makes it hard to hit them. Weird perspective. Enemies are better avoided than killed, in many cases. Novel, but not something I'd play often. Only one life. No weapon upgrades. Between stages you can change eht waeapm configuration of your left and right peashooters, but this doesn't increase your firepower.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Every stage has a black space background. Whoever made this is an obvious Star Wars fan, as there's an asteroid belt battle and an honest-to-goodness trench run where your radio buddy yells "there's too many of them." Oh brother.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The story and setup else is generic and the radio chatter gets old after long.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Polygonal artwork is very impressive for the time. It hasn't aged well but has a good framerate. An FMV background initially impressed also but zooms around so much it's just distracting.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Boring music. Good sound effects but an annoying radio buddy brings down the experience.

Overall Score: 52
