Son Son II
Kid Monkey KingGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1989
System: PCE
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Controls feel good...with a caveat. Although platforming is comfortable and the staff attack feels great, enemies take too many hits and try to walk right through you, which significantly slows the pace of play. What could've been a Goemon competitor is instead more akin to 3 Ninjas.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
I really like the stages. There are tons of platforms and branching paths. So much that it's almost overwhelming and confusing to know what your objective is. Still, I never got lost and enjoyed traversal more than the combat.
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Feels like a Monkey King, ancient China setting.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Colorful, cheery, and cute. Excellent sprites work and simple but attractive backgrounds.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Ugh. What a downer. The music is repetitive and offkey. I muted it after long.
