Spirou
Genre: action - platform
Publisher: Infogrames
Year: 1995
System: SNES PAL
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Has that laggy feel of a cinematic platformer (Prince of Persia, et al) but nowhere near as bad as most games in that category. Actually plays pretty well, for as little that it asks you to do. There's no attack, items, or other mechanics. Just run, jump, and climb on ladders and ledges. The ladders and ledges are my main complaint, as it's a crapshoot whether you will actually grab them. I've tried holding up, slowing my momentum toward the target, and trying to find the exact sweet spot, but I still can't figure out a consistent way to grab.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Great design. Stages each feel unique. Collectible coins help you find the right path and give incentive to explore without being hard nd fast requirements. There's an autoscroller stage, but most require you to simply get to the end. I never got lost and had a good time finding my way around the map.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Huge info dumps between stages. It's a platfromer, so I started skipping them. This is one of those games where a super fan would geek out but the rest of us don't konw or care who these characters are.
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Unbelievable detail, especially in the environment. Actually, the sprites are just as detailed, but man those backgrounds and foregrounds are incredible. Must be seen to be believed.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Good but forgettable music. It's quiet and almost serene. Kind of takes any edge away from the gameplay.
Overall Score: 69
