Startling Odyssey II: Maryuu Senso
DQ2 16-bit RemakeGenre: rpg - japanese
Publisher: RayForce
Year: 1994
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Simple RPG mechanics with plenty of QoL features. There's almost no depth to speak of, but battle speed is fast and the auto battle option is very welcome. Plus you can hold on A to fight without mashing. My main complaint is the extremely high encounter rate. It's insane. My other complaint is how brain dead simple the game is. Magic and Attack are you only options, making this as complex as a first gen RPG. Still, movement is good. Think of it as a Dragon Quest 2 16-bit remaster.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Extremely linear map and story design. Hop from place to place in miniscule areas. No puzzles or side quests that I could find. Still, I never got lost, which I appreciate, and my objective was always clear.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Generic and uninteresting plot as a knight whose sister has been kidnapped by a dragon. I like that you have credibility as an already legendary hero. Otherwise it's paint by numbers. Much of the plot is told in animated cutscenes with tons of Japanese dialogue that's lost on me. Features horrible text translation that's worse than early machine translation quality.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
The overhead graphics are fairly weak but the battle view is excellent. Great animation and interesting monster designs.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Pleasant music but nothing memorable. Weak for the genre but nothing to complain about. Great sounds effects
