Super Daisenryaku
Advanced Age WarsGenre: strategy - turn-based tactics
Publisher: Micro Cabin
Year: 1990
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Plays like an early, early version of Famicom/Advance Wars. The same mechanics are here - build units at a base or airport, move them along a grid, take neutral or enemy bases, and attack enemy units which has strengths or weaknesses against certain kinds of units. Unfortunately, that the UI is clunky and dated, and everything moves at a snail's pace. It was 45 minutes before I had my first encounter with an enemy unit. On the first map. The other huge complaint I've got is the jilted scrolling of the map. Only full tiles appear on the screen, and moving the cursor toward the border of the screen is the only way to scroll it. This causes the entire screen to redraw rather than scrolling it. It feels like an early DOS title. WAY too slow for me, despite the good gameplay mechanics. Oh, and the number and variety of units is admirable, but overwhelming.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
Maps are enormous! Way too big for a game with such clunky UI. Given that it took an hour to half only a couple of battles, I imagine it might take 5 or more hours to complete a single stage.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
It's modern (circa 1990) warfare, with real military hardware, such as F-16 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, and their Soviet, Asian, and European equivalents. Kudos for realism, but you'll need a military guidebook on hand to know what you're ordering.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Hideous. Again, looks like an early DOS game. Performance it equally bad, with terrible animations in the battle scenes. Those include some decent artwork, but it doesn't lift this game's art style above a 1.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
A single music track plays. It's simple but enjoyable.
