System: Sega CD
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
So much better than the SNES or Genesis versions! It's night and day. The controls are a little wonky since you can't stop to aim and shoot but this is easily worked around by carefully planning where to stand or crouch. Movement feels great and the rapid fire guns are fun to play with. Enemies lock onto you but have movement and attack patterns that give some variety to each encounter. And your grenades are fun to use, even though they require some forethought given how they travel. Tons of pickups through the stages.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Labyrinthine level maps but they're mostly linear. Clever design allows you to see inaccessible pickups that you can reach later, if you look for them. Very well done.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
This is how to make a movie tie-in! Between each stage is a cinematic that loosely describes what the next stage will look like. They spliced individual scenes from the movie and expended them into a full stage. Impressive stuff!
Art Style Score: 5
Art Style Notes:
Sprites are decent and explosions are satisfying. Sprites and animation are amazing while the backgrounds and foregrounds feature a ton of effects like parallax and filters. The entire package reminds me of Rendering Ranger on the SNES.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Music is mismatched for this franchise but is incredible all the same. It's a hard rock album done by the legendary Tommy Tallarico, if I'm not mistaken. Stage 3 has one of my favorite gaming songs ever. Still, the music doesn't quite match up with the mourning setting of the story so it feels out of place. Would've preferred the movie's soundtrack or something rocking. Sounds effects are good, especially explosions and guns.
