Tetris
You can rotate when I SAY you can ROTATE!Genre: puzzle - blocks

Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
I mean, it's Tetris, which is a perfect game. But they made two terrible choices that make it feel not quite right. First, you can't rotate a piece until it's fully on screen. They load in one line at a time so the line pieces, for example, take quite a while to load in. It's a minor annoyance when there aren't many lines, but is a game killer when the lines are stacking up near the top. When the pieces are falling slowly this loading mechanic just feels wrong. The second problem compounds with the first. Pressing down makes the piece fall, but it moves way too fast and without much animation. Plus it locks into place immediately. I was constantly trying to move the piece down a bit so I could rotate it but instead slammed it down to the floor. In addition to those terrible mechanics, this game's controls feel a little off, like it's eating some inputs. It's not bad, but worse than other versions of the game. After playing for a few minutes I was so confused that I had to go play the NES version to compare these gameplay differences. Twenty minutes later I remembered that I was supposed to be playing and reviewing the now obvoiusly inferior Mega Drive version. It's still Tetris, but nowhere near as
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Tons of modes (well, all the usual ones). Normal, Time Trial, and 2P. With options for Level, Height, and options to turn off seeing the next piece (why would anyone do this?) and use items blocks, which are exploding blocks.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Zero character.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Very small viewport which is only 25% of the width of the screen. This makes for small text and tiny blocks. The background displays a truly bizarre and random collections of pictures. There are landscapes, animals, and other images. There's no rhyme or rhythm.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Oh man, the music is a solid disappointment. It's a unique composition that does nothing for me. I miss the classic Russian music!
