Bomberman. Emphasis on BOMBGenre: arcade - n/a
Publisher: Right Stuff
Year: 1995
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 0
Gameplay Notes:
Easily the worst Bomberman ripoff out there. Instead of dropping your own bombs you must pick up preset bombs and use them to open chests containing diamonds. Collect them all and you move to the next stage. The only thing you can do is throw the bombs, whose fuse lights when you pick them up. After a set time they explode. Throwing a bomb sometimes cause it to stick to whatever it hits while others bounce off the wall, making it nearly impossible to ensure they are where you want them to be when they explode. Placement is absolutely critical since there are only so many bombs and their blast radius is tiny. Add it all up and you have a genuinely unfun experience. And to pile on even further, slowdown is nearly constant, movement is horribly slow, and the difficulty is through the roof. Avoid at all costs.
Level Design Score: 0
Level Design Notes:
The gameplay has no strengths, but the level designs seem determined to highlight every flaw. One wrong move and you can't win, and there's no shortcut to restart a stage. Even if you could, continues cost currency, of which you begin with none, so I dare you to finish even the first two stages. Horrible
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
The eclectic Japanese character designs and Running Man cartoon aesthetics are the only thing this game has going for it.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Again, the character designs are cute. However, sprites and stage backgrounds are unimpressive. The slowdown saps any charm out of the graphics.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Ok the music isn't bad. Some tracks are pretty fun actually. Weak sound effects though
