Twinkle Tale for MD

Twinkle Tale

Not as sissy as the title suggests

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Toyo Recording

Year: 1992

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like Pocky & Rocky or Legend of Valkyrie on PCE. You scroll the screen and in most cases you can't go back once it has scrolled. You've got three hits and three weapons to toggle between. Frequent power ups allow you to upgrade up to two times. The weapons give you a nice spread which makes enemies easy to deal with once you know their patterns and don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed. Full auto-fire and responsive controls round out the package. Fun shooter/run-n-gun.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

You can chose your stage. Levels feature mini bosses, branching paths, and segments that move vertically or laterally, even going left sometimes. There's a lot of variety here, although the enemy patterns are repeated frequently.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You're a big hat switch like Shierke from Berserk. A few NPCs will talk to you about your adventure but nothing about it grabbed me.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Disappointing in almost every way. Some of the background artwork is decent but most is a dithered, pixelated mess. Enemy projectiles are hard to distinguish from the background and sprites aren't interesting. There's a lot of shading but this only highlights how dark the graphics are. Lots of slowdown as well.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great music. Sounds effects have that Genesis funk, but the music is fantastic in both composition and arrangement.

Overall Score: 77
