Uchuu Senkan Gomora for MD

Uchuu Senkan Gomora

aka Bio-Ship Paladin

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: UPL

Year: 1991

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Movement is horribly slow. You have health (up to three bars) and your ship grows each time you get more health, making your hitbox enormous when at full health. You can pick up 5 options which attach to the top or bottom of your ship, depending on which part touches the pickup. These fire extra shots but will die if they are hit. Enemy hit boxes are unreliable. You can hit them repeatedly without any effect. It's weird. Enemies tend to explode into numerous shards which fly outward and pose a threat to you and your options. Imagine Asteroids as a horizontal shooter. Slowdown is frequent and obnoxious. It's so bad that I wondered if something was wrong with the emulator.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

The main gimmick in each stage is some sort of wall of enemies or rocks the you need to clear out as much as you care to. These generate a ton of extra projectiles so it's a gamble. I didn't like any of the stages I encountered. It's such a slow, plodding experience.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Terrestrial stages. Your ship looks like a space bus. Not a game you'd want your friends to see you playing.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Your sprite is hideous but enemies are pretty cool. They've got muted colors. The gratuitous exploding sprites drag this down with their ugly designs and scattershot appearance. It ruins the visual design. Backgrounds are lovely.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Horrible music! There's no beat and no rhythm. What even is this?

Overall Score: 38
