Valis for PCE CD

Valis

Better than the Genesis version

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Telenet Japan

Year: 1992

System: PCE CD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Significantly better than the Genesis version. The draw distance is increased to about 50% and the movement is slightly faster. Hit detection is s much better! This is the most substantial gameplay improvement. There's also a new movement mechanic where you can crouch and slide, but this is only useful during some boss fights. It's not a super compelling experience, but I enjoyed my time with it more than the other version.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Minimal platforming. Just go to the right and kill enemies as they appear on screen. There's a little more than in the Genesis version, but still a lackluster experience.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

You better have a Japanese schoolgirl fetish. Cutscenes look great and this time have full voice acting. These scenes can last several minutes. Lots of boring exposition. Bonkers anime story about fantasy world, dark world, dream world etc.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Another massive improvement over the Genesis version. This one looks more realistic, with great sprite work and monster designs. However, the sprites are tiny.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Great music had me bopping my head the whole time. Another significant improvement over the Genesis version. My only complaint is the sound effect for weapon C. It's so bad that I actively avoided picking it up, despite it being the best weapon.

Overall Score: 61
