Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Dat soundtrackGenre: adventure - platform
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1991
System: TG-16 CD
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
Horrible hit detection Enemies with no collision Weapon has better reach than the SNES version but still is awful to use. Insane difficulty - grind to win gameplay. Zero skill required or rewarded. Enemies don't respawn as quickly as the SNES version which oddly enough I found annoying because I could't grind as easily.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Linear story is easy to follow. Just go to the next area, beat a boss, and grab a statue. Repeat. Levels are short and boring
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Standard hero story. Impressive anime cut scenes at the start.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
The worst graphics of the three versions. The sprites are smaller and feature the least amount of animation of the three versions. But it's the backgrounds that are the real kicker here. The SNES version features some nice parallax scrolling but here it's Ninja Gaiden-level awfulness. The background seems to be scrolling backward and as choppy as could be. The foreground also scrolls badly making the whole thing look awful. It's a jittery mess.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Amazing soundtrack! I've heard people gush about the soundtrack and now I know why. The SNES and Genesis versions are fine but this is next level. Terrible sound effects but who cares. Oh and there's some awful, wooden voice acting during cutscenes.
