Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys
Genre: adventure - overhead
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Year: 1993
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Major improvements to the gameplay, even if it is a polished turd. Bumping enemies is still the only means of attack but they phase into you less and your alignment doesn't have to be so perfect. Insane amounts of grinding are still required and the inventory and magic systems are antiquated by 1993 standards.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Mostly more of the same linear world design. Feels a little better than prior games.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
The story is confusing and all over the place. But the presentation is top-notch, with excellent anime trappings such as cutscenes and voice acting.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Again, vast improvement over the earlier games. The sprites are still tiny and uninteresting but there's far more detail in the world.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
Another god-tier soundtrack. Maybe a step behind I & II, but still very good.
Overall Score: 54
