Atomic Robo-Kid for Genesis

Atomic Robo-Kid

When I grow up I shall be a robo man

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: Treco

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Huge sprite makes it hard to avoid projectiles. One hit kills. But only projectiles inflict damage. Enemies have hit boxes but no damage. Unique movement. Press up to leave the ground and hover and then move around at will like any shooter. Shoot the direction you face. Four collectable weapons - laser, 3 spread, bomb, and wide beam. Switch between at will. Responsive controls but slow movement. Best approach is to plod along slowly. Enemies respawn NES style No rapid fire. Button mash the whole time.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Uneven and strange levels. First level is a left to right corridor. 2 is a linear maze requiring all direction firing. 3 is another corridor in a jungle where only a narrow strip is visible. 4 is a weird fight against a single enemy who is expert at avoiding your shots. 5 is another corridor that looks like it's pulled from Castlevania. There's lots of variety in the settings, but most levels only last a minute or two. Incredibly short.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Generic sci-fi setting where you're a machine tasked with saving a world from alien invaders. It seems like you're just a robot but then there's an interlude after level 4 where you have a nonsensical conversation with a computer screen. Now I'm confused who or what I am. Also the character design is weird and your name is Robo Kid. Uhh

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

It looks like an early Genesis game. Simple sprites with virtually no animation. Large chunky sprites. Creative back and foreground artwork with a touch of parallax scrolling.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Music ranges from annoying to Mega Man esque, all within the same track. Unfortunately there are only 2, maybe 3 total songs so they get old. Sounds are repetitive and overused.

Overall Score: 50
