Bloody Wolf

Rambo meets Escape from NY meets Zero Wing

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1990

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Wonky hit detection. Bullets sometimes go through you but other times deal damage. Probably due to the weird not-3D, not-2D perspective. Feels a lot like the NES Metal Gear game. Basically a twin stick shooter with bad controls. Your bullets have a short travel distance before they disappear. Super annoying, especially on bosses. Slow, awkward movement. No rapid fire. Only one life!

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There's variety but the limitations of the controls counteract the best level elements. For example, jumping is weird so platforming is a chore. Getting onto ladders and other climbable surfaces is horrible inconsistent so vertical sections are an unwelcome sight. Enemies can spawn in interesting formations and locations but the wonky controls make them hard to take out.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Hilariously bad translation. Engrish at its finest. The most generic Rambo wannabe you'll ever find. Find and rescue the President.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Very simple. Somewhere between Rambo 3 and Mercs in terms of graphic quality. The death animation of enemies is hilarious.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Fine
