Bronkie The Bronchiasaurus

The best of the RayaSystems bunch

Genre: educational - n/a

Publisher: RayaSystems

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Many of the usual western dev sins but the game is quite playable. Really bad hit detection. Very slow movement Long attack makes it easy to avoid taking damage. In fact, it rarely happens. The game is incredibly simple as you might expect. Collect stuff, answer questions, and get to the end of each level.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Not too shabby. Mazelike but very linear. Several mechanics to deal with such as walls to steer you around, clotheslines to shimmy across, sloped platforms, and drain pipes to climb. Again, not bad. Easy to tell what can be interacted with.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

I'm giving props to the designers for making an attractive, cartoony playground in which to teach about asthma. Kids who needed this wouldn't be embarrassed to show it to their friends.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

NES+ graphics. Very simple sprites with two frame animation. Attractive cartoony character models and nice details in the backgrounds. Looks better than a lot of licensed platformers of the day.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Pretty weak sound overall. Music is pleasant but boring and the few sound effects are quiet, short, and minimal.

Overall Score: 50
