Chi Chi's Pro Challenge Golf

Chi Chi is the guy who swing his putter like a fencing sword after making a putt

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: Virgin Interactive

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Taking a shot is dumbed down to a single tap. Just aim and fire. Wind plays a huge factor, but it's putting which ruins this game. It's literally impossible. I cannot figure it out. I used save states to try every possible angle and speed to hit a 10-yard putt but every time it rims out like it smacked the flagpole. The only way I could sink a shot was from point blank range and even then it would often rim out despite being struck as soft as possible. There are a lot of button presses to change the direction of your shot, which is pretty annoying and surprising since most of the gameplay seems optimized for speed, almost like an arcade golf game.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

I like how streamlined they made it where it just lines you up and you can just hit A until you hit the ball. There's only two modes, a practice and tournament, but I like that the default setting is quick start. It's very arcade-like.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

Yet another licensed sports game from a forgotten player.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

I'll give them credit for trying something new. The graphics are ambitious to the point where they had to letter box it so much that it probably takes up 60% of the screen. The real problem is that the graphics are so not detailed that it's impossible to determine the direction of your shot, especially when putting.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

I like the fun little music that plays. The sounds are decent as well

Overall Score: 27
