Chiki Chiki Boys for Genesis

Chiki Chiki Boys

Wonder Boy with short levels

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Your only attack is to swing a sword. It has a decent range and you can mash it to almost make yourself in vulnerable since your attack hits things above and even behind you. Enemies and even their projectiles can be destroyed. So generally you just walk around mashing the whole time. You've got a screen clearing magic attack that you can use once or maybe twice per level and between stages you visit a shop where you can upgrade your sword, your defense, and your magic. Your jump is quite short so you have to time it well. Also enemies swarm to you and spawn infinitely so most of the challenge is keeping enemies off of you. It's a very easy game once you figure out how to proceed.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels are incredibly short. Like 2 minutes long. They're also quite simple. You can just go to the right. There's no verticality at all to any level that I saw. You can go whatever pace you want. You can linger to load up on coins or just push through to the end. Each level has a mini boss and then a final boss. The levels have some variety in that summer are completely grounded while others have you floating in the air or floating underwater.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Perhaps the most Japanese game on the Sega Genesis. It looks in plays like a Wonderboy game. So much so that I wonder if it's a spin-off or something. It's not quite as bonkers as some Japanese titles, but this has strong TurboGrafx-16 vibes.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Almost sickeningly cute and colorful graphics. Everything is very well drawn. Lots of parallax scrolling and detail in the backgrounds. All sprites are animated well. It's a fun game to look at.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Such an interesting soundtrack. It's more upbeat than I was expecting. But also more epic sounding rather than cute like a Mario game or something. The sound effects are particularly nice when collecting coins and slashing an enemies.

Overall Score: 65
