China Warrior

Enter the Draggin'

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1989

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Well, it's an autoscroller. Or more accurately, a very slow runner. I guess that's a walker, huh? In any case, the screen scrolls to the right and you have to kill or avoid enemies and obstacles as they approach you. You can kick, punch, jump, and duck. You can also move slightly forward or backward although there's rarely a reason to be anywhere but the very back of the screen. It takes barely any skill to defeat enemies and most obstacles can simply be ignored by ducking under or jumping over them. Incredibly easy game. This was clearly a tech demo for the enormous sprites and thus was never fleshed out into a full game.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

The levels are all very much the same. Scroll right and hit the monks (they don't attack you), duck under the birds and rocks, and jump over the boulders and snakes. Do this for a minute or two and then fight a boss by simply mashing the kick button while he walks into your attack area. Boring

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

You're very obviously Bruce Lee. If that's not cool enough, the ambiance of the music and graphics make this game look much better than it actually is.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Sprites are enormous. Your sprite is about 2/3rd the height of the screen. Minimal animation, but there are some nice effects in the background and everything is very well drawn.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

It's not going to win any awards, but I loved the music. It sounds like it's straight out of a 1960's kung fu flick. Sound effects are chirpy and pleasant.

Overall Score: 35
