Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck
More like Son of Barney RubbleGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Virgin Interactive
Year: 1993
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Surprisingly good movement. Short jump, just like the first game. The main improvement is the primary attack with a club that has a huge arc. This makes combat and puzzles easy. The attack has a long animation so you have to press the button far in advance which makes for slow progression.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Vast improvement over the ok level design of the original. This one focuses on the puzzle aspects more than combat, and I'm glad they did. There's less memorization required as well.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Let's be honest - you're obviously playing as Bam Bam from The Flintstones. The setting is no longer a generic prehistoric jungle - instead it's a vaguely prehistoric 1950's-ish city that looks an awful lot like Bedrock. Plagiarism aside, this isn't an exciting setting, and playing as a diapered baby was not on my bucket list.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Like its predecessor this game is both well drawn and ugly as sin. The character models are hideous creations, despite being well animated. Everything has that rounded, highly shaded Amiga look. While I despise the artwork I have to praise it as well.
