Crack Down
Ape Out on a quarter screenGenre: action - gun
Publisher: Sage's Creation
Year: 1991
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
Overheard view. Only 1/4 of the screen is used for the playable area. An onscreen map and normal HUD elements take up 1/4 each and the final quarter is a list of enemies, let you forget who you're fighting. As a result the screen is minuscule. Despite the tummy viewport there's tons of slowdown. Slow movement. Enemies have predictable patterns and are easy to avoid. Plays a bit like a tiny, slow Ape Out.
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Objective is to visit all X spots on the map to set bombs before leaving that area. Despite its simplicity I enjoyed clearing the maps which had a bit of variety in their layouts. Again felt a lot like Ape Out.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Generic near future sci-fi setting. Gave me a Shadowrun vibe.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
I can't get past how tiny everything is. Why they only used a quarter of the screen is beyond me. It doesn't look bad, but it has a screen resolution closer to Berserk for the Atari 2600 than something like Smash TV.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
I liked the jazzy tunes. Well composed. Simple pfft sounds when killing enemies or shooting weapons. Kinda lame but it's fine
