Cyber Core for TurboGrafx-16
Review #7021
Cyber Core
The Fly. The game.
Gameplay
Uses the two-plane structure common of Xevious and similar shooters. I generally dislike this mechanic and it doesn't work well here because your lower-level shot has such a short range. Using it requires you to move far too close to enemies which too often leads to taking damage.
Extremely difficult with no difficulty levels to choose from.
Enemies love to spawn in from the sides but your weapons, even when fully powered up, have barely any spread to them. So the gameplay is extremely horizontal. You spend most of the time endlessly weaving left and right to clear enemies as they spawn.
Thankfully both shots are rapid fire so you don't have to mash.
Level Design
Levels have a mid boss and a final boss. The final bosses are all about bombing the lower plane. Lovely.
Levels are also very long.
Theme
Bug themed shooter. The opening intro shows a human male named "Chimera" transform into a bug-like creature. It reminds me of the transformation Jeff Goldblum makes in The Fly.
Despite your sprite and all enemies being modeled after bugs you fly over a city, so apparently these are some very large bugs. Other levels look like grass and rivers so maybe you're shrinking and growing like in Minish Cap? Who knows?
The bug theme is interesting but not particularly interesting.
Art Style
Again, the bug theme didn't knock my socks off. Sprites are well drawn but not especially interesting. Enemies love to shoot slow-moving projectiles at you which are hard to identify against the busy backgrounds. Overall the graphics are good but not amazing.
Audio
The music in the first level was ok but levels 2 and 3 forced me to turn down the volume. They're repetitive and irritating.
