Gameplay

Excellent controls with a ton of powerups and mechanics to work with. The special abilities granted by the gems gives a lot of variety to the gameplay as well.
Tough as nails at times, especially in boss fights. Knocks it down a notch.

Level Design

Sadly the game's shortcoming is its confusing structure. Where do I go? What areas on the overworld map can be visited? Have I been here before? Do I need to backtrack? Some waypoints and a map would've solved these crippling issues. As it is the areas are exceptionally well designed, but confusing as hell.
Do yourself a favor - get a walkthrough and play through this near masterpiece.

Theme

One of the few games where you play as straight up villain. Firebrand is a bad dude but has challenges worth exploring. Love the Halloween theme and the bad guy story arch.

Art Style

Enormous sprites. Incredibly well animated and well drawn artwork throughout. Lots of attention to detail. Also a consistent visual style that's inspired by G&G but has an ever darker and more sinister feel to it.

Audio

Haunting tracks set an incredible mood rivaling any of the Ghouls n Ghosts titles. One of the best soundracks on the SNES.
Excellent sounds design to boot
