Desert Demolition Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote

Sonic on the clock

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1995

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Slippery controls. Sonic clone. Extremely restrictive time limit. This is the only way I ever died, and I died a lot. This pretty much destroys the game. Major momentum issues. Long animations after taking damage, bouncing on trampolines, climbing ladders, etc. No enemies - only environmental hazards and that looming clock. Lots to collect, but I'm not sure why. Everything is optional. Ultimately the gameplay is just so empty. Just go to the right and beat that darn clock. Tons of slowdown.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Levels have a ton of verticality. There's way too much branching paths and maze maneuvering for a game that requires you to go to the right quickly. Imagine playing Sonic with only 60 seconds to finish the level. That said, the levels are fine. Platforms are easy to spot and platforming is easy enough. The first level is the stark desert setting from the cartoon while level 2 is a little pueblo. It's pretty standard Western level design and it's a real shame the gameplay isn't better.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

You play as the Coyote and your objective is to catch the Roadrunner. The look and feel matches the cartoons perfectly. This is an impressive adaptation. And it finally answers the question, "what would happen if the Coyote caught the Roadrunner?" Spoiler: the Roadrunner explodes in a shower of ACME stamps and a clock.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Fantastic artwork. Looks just like the cartoon.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Cute, but man does the sound get old. The worst example is that a sound plays with every single step you take. So annoying! There's no music, only little ditties that play based on triggered events.

Overall Score: 49
