Double Dungeons

The fun dungeon. The fungeon!

Genre: rpg - dungeon

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1990

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

I generally don't like dungeon crawlers but this one had me captivated. It's so...streamlined. Just run around the maze and mash to fight. There's no parties, no magic, no menus, no inventory and no strategy. There isn't even a pause screen! Your armor and weapon are displayed right on screen and you can only hold one each so when you buy new stuff the old ones just disappear. And your xp and next level values are also on screen. Even the leveling is streamlined. Each time you reach the next level you're fully healed. So if you get low all you have to do is go back to a hallway with weak enemies and mash until you level up. Yes it's braindead, but that's why it's mildly fun.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Like all of these dungeon crawlers it's just an endless, featureless maze. This one does a good job of scaling the difficulty as you progress, but again, it's a boring environment. The best feature is that you can begin on any stage. Again, this is a streamlined RPG if ever there was one.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Not much to see here

Art Style Notes:

Fast movement and lovely animation. The enemy sprites are nothing to admire but wow does the walking look great.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Love the song that plays. The shop song is nice as well.
